Early Numeracy Intervention (ENI)

Welcome! You play a crucial role in your child’s success throughout the ENI program so your help in completing the take-home activity with your child will greatly contribute to their progress!

 

Program Overview

The focus of the intervention program is to develop a strong understanding of number sense and operations.

The GHSD Early Numeracy Program provides targeted numeracy intervention to small focus groups of 2-4 students in Grades One and Two.  The intervention focuses on teaching students efficient strategies based on current research which will help  students think, reason and apply mathematical concepts to solve problems. Students learn math by being actively engaged in discovering the relationships between numbers.  A large component of this program is using manipulatives which help students make sense of the concepts and skills they’re working on.

Each evening, your child will have a take-home activity in their Early Numeracy bag. Often this is a number ring and students work through a rotating set of cards as they master each set. We encourage you to work on the number ring or other take-home activity daily for 5-10 minutes.

 

What is Number Sense and How is it Developed

“… good intuition about number and their relationships. It develops gradually as a result of exploring numbers, visualizing them in a variety of contexts, and relating them in ways that are not limited by traditional algorithms.”  Howden, 1989, p. 11
