Parent Information: Personal Mobile Devices in Schools

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope everyone had a fantastic summer holiday. In June, Alberta Education issued a Ministerial Order regarding the use of personal mobile devices and social media in schools. In accordance with the Ministerial Order, we have developed a draft Administrative Procedure that establishes clear guidelines for use of cell phones and personal mobile devices for the purpose of enhancing learning, while minimizing distractions, and protecting privacy and academic integrity. Golden Hills School Division is committed to fostering a safe, caring, respectful and focused learning environment.

Starting September 1st, Golden Hills students will not be able to use personal mobile devices during instructional time, except when explicitly permitted by a teacher for educational purposes. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons, which will be arranged through the school and principal. Additionally, students will no longer be able to access social media on both school networks and devices.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and support. If you have any questions about your child’s individual needs, please do not hesitate to contact your principal.

Sincerely,
Jeff Grimsdale
Superintendent of Schools
